what we do

The Herndon eleven is a group of facilitators organized to advance the success of health care reform in the United States. We found this calling in May of 2005 as the team facilitating the Health Justice event at Capgemini’s Accelerated Solutions Environment (ASE) in Herndon, Virginia.

This event brought together 40 people from a diverse group of organizations deeply devoted to the cause of health justice. Their goal during the three-day session was to build a strategy for achieving universal access to affordable health care in the United States. As our team facilitated the participants through this work, we became so passionate about its importance that we stepped forward to offer our ongoing help in advancing the cause of health justice for all Americans.

Since then, we have facilitated two related sessions and become involved on an individual basis in supporting a number of health justice efforts.

First Session. On October 21, 2005, four members of H11 facilitated a half-day session in Washington, DC for approximately 80 participants from the Universal Health Care Action Network (UHCAN) and the Washington Interreligious Staff Community (WISC). The session took place during overlapping conventions of these two organizations. The intent of the session was to bring faith-based and general advocy-based parties together to form strategies around message framing, communication and aligning with non-traditional partners. One member of the group also facilitated a three-hour work session for UHCAN on October 23, 2005.

Second Session. On November 11-12, 2005, eight members of H11 facilitated a day and a half session for approximately 130 participants from USAction. The session took place in Chicago during USAction’s Delegates Assembly, which was focused on establishing and using a progressive worldview to raise up those aspects of people’s consciousness that are about community and mutual responsibility. In doing so, USAction believes it can more effectively advance the progressive agenda, which includes universal access to affordable health care. The participants in the H11 session developed plans for how USAction and its affiliates can integrate worldview into all of their campaign and coalition work.

In 2005, H11 members have also undertaken individual projects on behalf of organizations whose representatives participated in the Health Justice event.
